The signals are FSK modulated, i.e. there is roughly speaking one of two adjacent frequencies transmitted.
The distance of the frequencies is typically 10-50 kHz.
With a FM receiver you get a digital signal, which is specially encoded to exploit the existing channel properties.

Find „TNC3S“ and „FSK9601 modem“ for the modem and PC-interface.
The data protocol is always Packet-Radio (AX.25), so you can decode it with any TNC.
